Rising numbers of papers of increasing quality submitted to Oral Oncology, together with an increasing thirst of readers to view outputs at an increasingly early stage, means the time from acceptance of a paper to its publication is increasingly important. Oral Oncology has recognised this demand, and has developed an initiative aimed at publishing more content and in a faster time - thus enhancing the service for our authors and readers.

Oral Oncology last year had more than 180,000 articles downloaded from ScienceDirect. Thus the journal is now primarily read online – not in print – and most readers come through to Oral Oncology from PubMed where they have done a key word literature search. Few readers any more read print journals from cover to cover, and authors are thus increasingly willing for their papers to be published online and not in print, especially since the paper appears at a much earlier stage after submission to the journal.

To expedite publication and reduce the time from acceptance to final publication in print, Oral Oncology is introducing E-pages in 2009. E-pages are electronic pages published online only. Publication online will be much faster than print publication.

We will offer authors the choice between publication in the journal in print, or publication in the journal in E-pages. All articles published in the E-pages will be cited in the usual way in that their paper will have volume, issue and page numbers, and they will be indexed by PubMed and their citations will count towards the Impact Factor of Oral Oncology. Articles published in E-pages will still have their Abstract plus full citation details produced in print, and the article will also be listed in the print edition’s Table of Contents, so that print subscribers know there are E-pages, which they can then view online.

By publishing E-pages we will also increase the capacity of Oral Oncology by a more cost effective method than increasing the printed pages – thus enabling the subscription costs to be kept down. Oral Oncology will monitor the adoption of E-pages by authors and we look forward to receiving feedback once the E-pages are launched in 2009.
